A Place to Enjoy Tea and Sunflower Seeds by the Maiden's Tower Under the Moonlight on Weekends and Evenings
The foundations and lower sections of the Maiden's Tower, as seen today, date back to the reign of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. The surrounding platform is extensively paved, and a marble plaque with a medallion bears Sultan Mahmud II's 1832 seal, created by calligrapher Rasim, who gave the tower its present form. The side facing Eminönü is more spacious, with a cistern located in this section.
Originally, this island hosted a tomb during the Greek period and later served as a customs station in the Byzantine era, with additional structures built around it. During the Ottoman era, the Maiden’s Tower took on numerous functions, including serving as a watchtower, a defense fortress, an exile station, and even a quarantine room. Despite its varied roles, it has never lost its primary purpose of guiding ships at night with its iconic beacon. From past to present, the Maiden’s Tower has also been a guide to dreams. In 2000, it was restored and transformed into a venue where the sound of cutlery and crockery can now be heard.
In 2021, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism initiated restoration work on the Maiden's Tower, which was completed in May 2023. Faithfully restored to its original design, the tower reopened on May 11, 2023, with a laser light show.
The Maiden’s Tower, a jewel of the Bosphorus, has reopened its eyes to the world. A nightly light and laser show is held at 9:00 p.m., inviting you to witness this marvel.
Now designated as a historic monument, the Maiden's Tower is no longer used as a restaurant but as a place where visitors can enjoy the stunning views of Istanbul.
Visitors with a Museum Card (MüzeKart) can enter the Maiden's Tower for free, though they will need to pay a transportation fee.
The Maiden’s Tower is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Located in Üsküdar, the Maiden’s Tower is easily accessible by ferry from Eminönü, followed by a short walk to the nearest shore. On weekends and evenings, you can sit on the shoreside, enjoying views of the tower and moonlight. Small boats are available if you wish to visit the tower.
Photos of the Maiden's Tower taken at night often grace many computer desktops. By day, it’s a popular spot for wedding or engagement photo shoots.
