Located outside the Topkapı City Walls in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district, Takkeci Ibrahim Agha Mosque, popularly known as the “Mosque of Dreams,” is one of the city’s quietly powerful historical landmarks.
Built between 1591 and 1592, the mosque is a refined example of 16th-century Ottoman architecture. Yet what truly sets it apart is not only its artistic beauty, but the dream-inspired legend behind its construction.
The interior of the mosque is especially renowned for its 16th-century Iznik tiles, admired for both their vibrant colors and symbolic motifs. Among these decorations, grape motifs appear in some tile panels — a subtle reference to the dream that led to the mosque’s creation.
Inside the mosque, visitors can also observe a fine example of Ottoman architectural ornamentation, where tilework (çini) and kalem işi (hand-painted decoration) are used together in harmony.

According to legend, Takkeci (Arakiyeci) Ibrahim Agha, who lived a modest life, dreamed of building a mosque for his neighborhood. In a dream, he was told that the money needed for the mosque lay in three grapes he would eat from a vine wrapped around a palm tree across a bridge in Baghdad.
After a long and arduous journey, he reached Baghdad and followed the instructions from his dream. There, he met a man who revealed that the real treasure was actually beneath Ibrahim Agha’s own house in Istanbul.
Upon returning home, Ibrahim Agha discovered the hidden treasure beneath his house and used it to build the mosque. Because of this remarkable story, the mosque has been remembered for centuries as “the work of a dream” and lovingly called the “Mosque of Dreams.”
Takkeci Ibrahim Agha Mosque is not grand like the great imperial complexes. It does not dominate its surroundings. Instead, it stands quietly along an ordinary road.
Yet for centuries, it has silently carried:
