St. Anthony’s Basilica Crypt Opens to Visitors: A Hidden Gem in Istanbul

Hidden Crypt of Istanbul’s Largest Catholic Church Opens to Visitors

A fascinating new discovery awaits visitors in Istanbul! A previously inaccessible section of St. Anthony of Padua Basilica, known as one of the city’s largest and most important Catholic churches, has opened to the public as part of a special exhibition. 🏛️✨

🏛️ Discover the Crypt of St. Anthony’s Basilica

Located beneath the main church, the crypt is a unique underground section that has been closed to visitors for a long time. Staff members reportedly refer to this area as the “lower church.”

Because it has remained closed for many years, the crypt is remarkably well preserved. Its architectural details and colors are especially striking, with many of the original colors looking surprisingly vivid.

Even if you have visited St. Anthony’s Basilica before, this exhibition gives you the chance to discover a completely different part of the historic building.

🎨 About the Exhibition

The exhibition is titled:

“From Kalenderhane to St. Anthony’s Basilica: The Heritage of St. Francis in Türkiye on His 800th Anniversary”

Alongside the crypt itself, the exhibition features historical architectural drawings and documents connected to the building and its history.

Some of the architectural drawings on display are being shown to the public for only the second time in their history, while others are being exhibited for the very first time.

⏰ Visiting Hours

🕓 16:00 – 19:00

📅 Closed on Sundays

There is currently no confirmed closing date for the exhibition. However, according to the information provided, it is expected to continue for at least another two months.

📍 How to Find the Crypt

When facing St. Anthony’s Basilica from the front, look for the stairs on the left-hand side.

Walk down the stairs to reach the crypt and discover this fascinating section beneath the main church.

✨ A Different Way to Discover Istanbul

Istanbul is full of hidden historical spaces, and this exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to see a side of St. Anthony’s Basilica that has remained inaccessible for years.

If you are interested in history, architecture, religious heritage and lesser-known places in Istanbul, this is definitely a spot worth adding to your itinerary.

📌 Tip: Since the exhibition’s final closing date has not yet been announced, it is a good idea to check the latest information before visiting.
