Valens Aqueduct

Valens Aqueduct is located in Saraçhane, Istanbul. Its construction began during the reign of Emperor Constantine I (306-337) and was completed by Emperor Valens in 378. It carried drinking water from Alibeyköy to the city. The aqueduct consists of two tiers of arches. While it was originally one kilometer long, today only about eight hundred meters of it remains standing.

This aqueduct from the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods is also known as the Hadrian or Valens Aqueduct. Built to solve the city's water shortages, the aqueduct fell into disrepair over time. After the city was captured by the Ottomans, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror repaired the water system and made the aqueduct functional again. The origin of the name "Bozdoğan" is not well understood. Additions were made to the aqueduct during the reigns of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, Sultan II. Bayezid, and Suleiman the Magnificent.

For fifteen centuries, the Bozdoğan Aqueduct has been one of the city's most important water sources.

Adjacent to the Bozdoğan Aqueduct is the Gazanfer Ağa Complex.
