About Taksim Mosque

Taksim Mosque is located in Taksim Square, one of the most vibrant and iconic areas of Beyoğlu, Istanbul. Rising at the heart of the city, the mosque has quickly become a significant landmark, drawing attention with both its architecture and its symbolic location.

The mosque was designed by architects Şefik Birkiye and Selim Dalaman. Construction began on February 9, 2017, and the mosque officially opened for worship on May 28, 2021, following the Friday prayer, with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

History and Location

Taksim Mosque is situated just behind the historic Taksim Maksem, a water distribution structure built in 1731 by Sultan Mahmud I. This proximity gives the mosque a strong connection to Istanbul’s historical water systems and urban development.

Located at the point where Istiklal Street meets Taksim Square, the mosque stands among some of the most historically and culturally significant buildings in the area. The closest place of worship to Taksim Mosque is the Aya Triada Greek Orthodox Church, highlighting Taksim Square’s long-standing role as a shared space for different cultures and faiths.

A Place of Worship in the Heart of the City

Thanks to its central location, Taksim Mosque is easily accessible for both worshippers and visitors exploring Istanbul. Amid the constant movement of the square, the mosque offers a sense of calm and reflection while contributing a new silhouette to Taksim’s skyline.

Today, Taksim Mosque represents not only a modern place of worship but also an important symbol of Istanbul’s layered history and multicultural urban identity.
