The Museum of Innocence is both a novel written by Orhan Pamuk and a museum he created. From the 1990s, Pamuk conceived the novel and the museum together from the very beginning. Set between 1974 and the early 2000s, the love story tells of Istanbul life between 1950 and 2000 through two families, one rich and one of modest means, with flashbacks and memories.
In the museum, the things the novel's characters used, wore, heard, saw, collected and dreamed of are displayed in carefully arranged boxes and showcases.
You don't need to read the novel to enjoy the museum, just as you don't need to visit the museum to enjoy the novel. But those who read the novel will better grasp the museum's many meanings, and those who visit the museum will see many things they did not notice while reading the novel. The novel was published in 2008, and the museum opened in spring 2012.
