Hidiv Kasrı; Where Istanbul's History and Aesthetics Meet

One of the significant historical and tourist attractions in the Beykoz district is Hidiv Kasrı (Hidiv Pavilion). Located on the slopes of Çubuklu and offering a stunning view of the Bosphorus, the history of Hidiv Kasrı dates back to the early 20th century.

Historical Background:

During the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, starting from the time of Kavalalı Mehmed Ali Pasha, the Egyptian governors were granted a special status in the Ottoman Empire. This led to the transformation of the position of the Governor of Egypt into a dynastic title, with the governors being called Hidiv. By the end of the 19th century, the Egyptian ruler, Abbas Hilmi Pasha, sought Ottoman and German support against the Anglo-Saxon influence in Egypt. In order to secure this support, the young Pasha was required to stay in the Ottoman capital. In 1903, he purchased two wooden mansions in Çubuklu. Over time, he acquired the surrounding slopes and upper terraces, covering an area of 270 dönüms (approximately 270,000 square meters), to build his residence. In 1907, he commissioned the Italian architect Delfo Seminati to design a magnificent "Art Nouveau" palace, reflecting the architectural style of the era.

Architectural Significance:

Built on an area of 1000 square meters, the pavilion stands as a remarkable structure with its tower offering panoramic views of the Bosphorus, connecting two continents, and overlooking the azure waters of the channel and lush green forests. The Hidiv Kasrı is an exceptional building that combines the beauty of nature with historical architectural elegance.

Cultural and Social Role:

With all its features, Hidiv Kasrı serves as an important recreational area where Istanbul residents can escape the stresses of city life. Moreover, it also hosts various events such as weddings, engagements, and other social gatherings.

This elegant pavilion not only offers breathtaking views and architectural beauty but also has become a symbol of the Ottoman-Egyptian connection and is a must-see spot for visitors interested in both history and nature.
