It constitutes one of the richest and most extant examples of Eastern Roman art in the world.
Located about one hundred meters from the Theodosius Walls in the Edirnekapı neighborhood of Fatih, the Chora Mosque was originally the center of the Chora Monastery, a significant complex during the Eastern Roman Empire. This structure is one of the richest and best-preserved examples of Eastern Roman art in the world. After the conquest of Istanbul, it continued to function as a church for fifty-eight more years. One of Turkey's most visited museums, Chora was transferred to the Directorate of Religious Affairs by the President following a ruling by the Council of State in 2019, and it reopened for worship on May 6, 2024.
The mosaics and frescoes of Chora Mosque hold great importance due to their artistic quality and historical value. These works vividly showcase the intricacies of Byzantine art and the religious narratives of the period.
