If you live in Istanbul, you must see this cultural treasure and add the richness of a new discovery to yourself.
The Sahaflar Bazaar is behind the Beyazıt Mosque and was formerly known as the Hakkâklar (engravers') Bazaar. Second-hand bookselling, an important part of Ottoman cultural life, moved here from the Grand Bazaar in the 1890s and grew over time. After a fire in 1950, the bazaar was rebuilt in reinforced concrete and devoted entirely to book sales.
The bazaar has two gates: one is right next to the Beyazıt Mosque, while the other opens onto the road leading to the Grand Bazaar. At the Sahaflar Bazaar you can take a nostalgic stroll and enjoy this cultural heritage full of books.
