On the islands, which came under Ottoman rule before the conquest of Istanbul, a predominantly Greek population lived until the end of the 19th century. The first Muslim settlement on the islands began in the 1850s. As the Muslim population on the island began to grow, the need was felt to build a mosque on Büyükada. The Hamidiye Mosque, built on Büyükada by order of Abdülhamid II and opened for worship in 1895, is an elegant, aesthetic building.
