One of Istanbul's most important restoration projects has brought another remarkable historical space back to life.
The room where Sultan Abdulhamid II, the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, spent the final years of his life and passed away has officially reopened to visitors at Beylerbeyi Palace.
This newly accessible section offers history enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore one of the most significant locations connected to the final years of the Ottoman Empire.
After ruling the Ottoman Empire for 33 years, Sultan Abdulhamid II was deposed in 1909 and exiled to Thessaloniki (Salonika).
He remained there under surveillance for nearly three years.
However, when the Balkan Wars threatened the city's security, the Ottoman government decided to bring him back to Istanbul for safety.
Upon his return, he was assigned to live in Beylerbeyi Palace, where he would spend the remainder of his life.
For approximately six years, Abdulhamid II lived under strict supervision inside Beylerbeyi Palace.
Separated from public life and largely isolated from the outside world, he spent his final years in the room that visitors can now see today.
On February 10, 1918, at the age of 75, he passed away in this very room due to heart failure following pneumonia.
The reopening of this historic space allows visitors to stand in the very place where one of the Ottoman Empire's most influential rulers spent his final days.
Located on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus in Üsküdar, Beylerbeyi Palace was built during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz in the 1860s.
The palace served as the Ottoman Empire's summer residence and was frequently used to host foreign monarchs, diplomats, and distinguished guests.
Today, it is admired for its elegant architecture, beautifully landscaped gardens, magnificent Bosphorus views, and richly decorated interiors.
With the reopening of Abdulhamid II's private room, the palace now offers visitors an even deeper insight into Ottoman history.
