Bicycle and Horse Carriage Fun in Heybeliada

İstanbul’un Büyükada’dan sonra en büyük adası Heybeliada’dır. Buraya Heybeliada denilmesinin sebebi, uzaktan bakıldığında adanın yere bırakılmış bir heybeye benzemesinden dolayıdır.

Bicycle and Horse Carriage Fun in Heybeliada

The largest island in Istanbul after Büyükada is Heybeliada. The reason it is called Heybeliada is because when viewed from a distance, the island resembles a saddlebag left on the ground. It is one of the most popular places in Istanbul. It is famous not only for its nature, clean air and beauty, but also for its institutions such as the Navy, Sanatorium and Priest School.

The width of the island is 2700 meters and its length is 1200 meters. Heybeliada, which consists of 4 hills, is located in the middle of the Istanbul islands. The highest hill is Değirmentepe (136 meters). Other hills are Taşocağı Hill, Makarios Hill and Ümit Hill. This hill, formerly known as Papaz Hill, is 85 meters high and has a Priest School on it. There are also 4 ports on the island. Çam Harbor and Bahriye Harbor, located in a beautiful bay, are the most important of them. The important structures of the island are the Naval School, Aye Ofemya Holy Spring, Turkey's first sanatorium Heybeliada Sanatorium (established in 1924), Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar High School, Abbas Halim Pasha Mansion, Priest School, other religious structures and official buildings, which are famous residents of Heybeliada.

Heybeliada, like the other islands of Istanbul, is free of motor vehicles. Transportation is by horse-drawn carriage or bicycle. It is not possible to see many vehicles on the island, except for official vehicles. It is ideal for those who want to ride a bicycle. It is possible to rent for the whole day at more affordable prices. The number of people who come here for swimming and picnics is also quite high.
