Beykoz Mecidiye Kasrı: Memories of a Historical Palace
Nestled in the unique historical landscape of Istanbul, Beykoz Mecidiye Kasrı is one of the rare Ottoman-era buildings that has survived to this day. Originally commissioned by the Egyptian Governor, Kavalalı Mehmed Ali Pasha, for Sultan Abdülmecid, the palace has witnessed many significant events and is now open to visitors as a museum.
Construction of Beykoz Mecidiye Kasrı began in 1845, named in honor of Sultan Abdülmecid. Although initially started by the Egyptian Governor, the construction was completed by his son after the governor's death and was subsequently gifted to Sultan Abdülmecid. Situated on the Asian shores of the Bosphorus, at the location known as Hünkâr İskelesi, the palace is one of the first buildings in Ottoman architecture to reflect a new architectural style.
The palace was used as a royal riding palace by Sultan Abdülmecid and, in later years, became an important venue for hosting foreign dignitaries and ambassadors. The two-story, semi-masonry building reflects a Neoclassical architectural style. Photographs taken during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II show the interior of the palace furnished with lavish decor, showcasing the opulence of the era.
Beykoz Mecidiye Kasrı has witnessed important events in Ottoman history. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), the palace hosted senior leaders of the Zeybeks, who had gathered in the tented camp set up in İzmir and Aydın. Additionally, the palace hosted important ceremonies, such as the 1854 visit of Prince Jerome Napoléon and the official events organized by Sultan Abdülaziz.
After being used for various purposes throughout its history, the palace was attached to the National Palaces administration on December 23, 1997, and placed under preservation. Following restoration works between 2010 and 2016, the palace officially opened as a museum on April 11, 2017.
Beykoz Mecidiye Kasrı, with its rich history and magnificent architecture, offers a significant contribution to Istanbul’s cultural heritage. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this historic palace and get a closer look at the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire.
