Location and Access
The Basilica Cistern is the largest covered cistern in Istanbul. It is accessed from a small building located west of Hagia Sophia. The ceiling of the space, resembling a forest of columns, is made of brick and features cross vaults. It was named due to a nearby basilica.

Currently operated by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Culture Inc., the Basilica Cistern not only serves as a museum but also hosts many national and international events.

Visitor Information
The cistern is a popular attraction for both local and foreign tourists. Entry is paid, and the museum card is not accepted. Inside, visitors can take photos wearing Ottoman costumes. Originally built to meet the water needs of certain areas in Istanbul, it has been transformed into a museum due to the construction of modern reservoirs.

Location and How to Get There
The Basilica Cistern is located in Sultanahmet, within the Fatih district. You can reach it by tram and get off at Sultanahmet station.

Visitor Hours
The Basilica Cistern is open every day from 09:00 to 22:00.

Payment Methods
Museum cards are not valid. Credit cards and cash in Turkish Lira are accepted for entry.

  • Entry Restrictions: Due to security reasons and crowd control, large items such as suitcases are not allowed inside.
  • Photography and Video: Photography and video recording are permitted as long as they do not disturb other visitors. Professional photography and any shooting with a tripod require written permission and may incur a fee.
  • Food and Beverages: No food or beverages are allowed inside the cistern.
  • Smoking and Pets: Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is strictly prohibited inside the cistern. Pets are allowed if they are in a carrying case.

Humidity and Health Warning
The humidity level inside the cistern is 96%. Electronic devices may be damaged due to contact with liquids. Visitors should be cautious of the humidity and light levels during their visit, especially concerning health issues.

Visitor Safety Regulations
The cistern is dark, with slippery floors and low railing levels. Leaning against or sitting on the railings is dangerous and prohibited. Visitors should hold onto the railings while going up and down the stairs at the entrance. The stairs and walking platforms inside the cistern are not suitable for high-heeled shoes.

Age Restrictions and Other Prohibitions
For security reasons, children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult to enter the museum. Swimming in the cistern or touching/taking the wish coins is forbidden. Touching historical structures (columns, statues, paintings), climbing on them, and entering with sharp, flammable tools or weapons are strictly prohibited.
