Anatolian Lighthouse

The Anatolian Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of the Bosphorus on the Anatolian side, on the Yon (Hrom) Cape, where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea. It is almost opposite the Rumeli Lighthouse on the European side. The lighthouse is open to visitors until 17:00 in the evening, after which it closes. The village where the lighthouse is located is also called by the same name (Anadolu Lighthouse).

The Anatolian Lighthouse blinks on and off thanks to the 1000-watt bulb inside its fixed cylinder crystal and a screen that rotates around the crystal with an electric motor, and is supported by butane gas in case of power cuts. The lighthouse, which is preserved as it was on its first day and can see 16 nautical miles in clear weather, guides ships coming from the Black Sea and entering the Bosphorus as one of the gates of Istanbul opening to the Black Sea.

The lighthouse, which also gave its name to the village where it is located, was established in 1834. During the Crimean War, it was decided that the lighthouse would be built so that French and British ships could see the entrances to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea, and the tower section was built by the French on May 15, 1856, together with the lighthouse on the opposite shore. In 1933, the 100-year operating privilege granted to the French was cancelled and it was completely transferred to the Turks.

The lighthouse made of white stone is 20 meters tall. Only the narrow part of its face facing Beykoz remains in darkness. The Anatolian Lighthouse is one of the rare lighthouses that has preserved its original state. Only the engine that rotates the crystal of the lighthouse and the bulb were added later. The lighthouse, which is 75 meters above sea level, emits white light once a second and stays for 18 seconds.
